The different spellings for the long oo sound
create another long rote-learning list. Oo is the main spelling for the long oo sound, but just as many words spell this sound differently:

The oo spelling causes reading difficulties, as well as spelling ones, for many children,
because it spells the shorter oo sound too:

The spelling of short oo is also irregular. And just like the oo spelling (good - food, mood), all the other graphemes used for it are more usual for other sounds (u in ‘put’ – but, cut, nut;
‘oul’ in ‘could’ – mould, shoulder, boulder;
o in ‘wolf’ and ‘woman’ – golf, wonton):
